What to do if your mock test score is unstable /
The most stressful mock-test pattern is not always a low score. It is a score that jumps up and down.
One day Speaking is enough, the next day Listening drops. One mock test is close to the target, the next one is far away.
Do not only look at Overall Overall
PTE Overall is not a simple average of Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. Integrated tasks can affect more than one skill, so one unstable task can move several scores.
RS affects Speaking and Listening. SWT affects Writing and Reading. WFD and SST affect both Listening and Writing.
Pattern 1: the same skill is weak every time 情况 1:每次都卡同一项
If the same task or skill is weak every time, stop doing random mock tests and train that weakness directly.
For example, repeated WFD spelling errors need dictation and spelling review, not another full mock test immediately.
Pattern 2: a different skill drops each time 情况 2:每次差不同分项
If a different skill drops each time, check full-test execution: fatigue, timing, attention, stress and task switching.
This pattern often feels random, but it may actually mean the full-test routine is not stable yet.
Pattern 3: single tasks are fine, full tests drop
Doing 10 WFD sentences in isolation is different from doing WFD near the end of a full test.
You may need endurance practice, partial mock tests and better recovery between sections.
Keep a fluctuation record
After each mock test, record section scores, abnormal tasks, execution state, error types and one variable to change next time.
Do not change five things at once. If you do, you will not know what actually affected the next score.
Before booking the next test
Look for four kinds of evidence: diagnosis, ability improvement, stable practice scores and better test execution.
This is not an official booking rule. It is a practical way to avoid repeating the same expensive experiment.
